Temazcal Ceremonies in Mexico: 3 Places to Take Part

2 tours

A temazcal is a low domed sweat lodge heated with volcanic stones. It was used across Mesoamerica long before the Spanish arrived and it is still run as a ceremony rather than a spa treatment: a temazcalero leads it, there is chanting and copal smoke, and it lasts around an hour in the dark. The 3 below say who leads each one, how long it runs and what to bring. Tell the operator in advance if you have heart or blood pressure problems.

“This experience was the worst trip I have ever taken through trip advisor. The whole experience was not what was advertised. Very cheesy Mayan actors. Begged for money for 1 hour. Then went on the boat with an angry guide. He yelled at my son and I while we tried to steer the boat to the snorkeling island. We enjoyed snorkeling but we were only there 20 minutes. Last group in and first group out. They also charged us $200 more when we checked in. Come on Trip Advisor you can do better then this.”
